Jerome is an innocent who hangs out in one of the town’s many strip clubs and has a crush on Laura-Lai, who’s part tightfisted realist and a bit of a deranged Tennessee Williams faded belle. But Jerome finds himself attracted to Laura-Lai’s rebellious daughter Debbie (Kathleen Mendoza), who’s his age and has fled to her mom’s shop after setting fire to her college dorm. Adding to the confusion are the midnight misadventures of Debbie’s younger brother Connor (Kenneth Tan Ronquillo), who’s either gay, a straight Peeping Tom or terminally confused.

Nguyen succeeds better with some creative tongue-in-cheek stagings of the Parisian fantasies and Erika V. Pallasigue’s shadow play as a stripper and a peeped-upon teen. A TV screenwriter and emerging playwright, Khoo doesn’t seem to have decided whether she’s writing a sitcom, a sex farce or a modern morality play. But at times, in the fissures between the forms and at odd, unexpected moments, her “Fayette-Nam” provides bits of real pleasure and intriguing glimpses of promise.

SAN FRANCISCO—Police say one man is dead and another two are wounded after a scuffle turned into a gunfight outside a problem San Francisco club.
At 3 a.m. Saturday police say 30-year-old Harris Fullbright was fatally shot outside Pink Diamonds, a Tenderloin strip club with a history of violence and complaints.
San Francisco homicide Inspector Mike Johnson says Fullbright was shot after fighting with another man who was in the club’s line outside. Police say at some point a third man jumped into the fracas, shot Fullbright and injured the two other men.
There have been no arrests in the case.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who threatened to shutter the club last year, says “enough is enough” and is vowing to shut Pink Diamonds down.

… 06-27) 19:14 PDT SAN FRANCISCO — One man was shot dead and two others wounded early Saturday outside a Tenderloin strip club that San Francisco city officials have long sought to shut down because they say it is a magnet for violence and uncontrolled crowds.
Harris Fullbright, 30, of San Francisco, was slain at 3 a.m. outside the Pink Diamonds, a club at 220 Jones St. that has been dogged by violence and noise complaints for at least two years. At the time, Fullbright was embroiled in a scuffle with another man waiting in line outside the club on Jones between Turk and Eddy streets, said San Francisco homicide Inspector Mike Johnson. A third man intervened, Johnson said, opening fire, killing Fullbright and injuring two other men. One of the survivors was shot twice and the other was hit in the foot. Johnson said that club security guards were out front as there was a line of people trying to get in s …
By Juliette Tang Hot on the heels of Ivy League Stripper, Confessions of an Ivy League Lady of Pleasure, and Confessions of an Ivy League Bookie comes Confessions of an Ivy League Pornographer, another book about an Ivy League graduate who eschewed a predictable post-graduate path to a stable and respectable job in favor of a career that, well, doesn’t generally require an Ivy League degree. Confessions of an Ivy League Pornographer is an interesting look into the life of a young man who channeled his creative drive out of the hallowed halls of Brown and into the Los Angeles porn industry. However, Benjamin is hardly the first Ivy Leaguer to go the route of porn. Bill Asher, an ‘84 graduate of Dartmouth College – this blogger’s own alma mater – is the President and co-owner of Vivid Entertainment, the world’s largest pornography distributer. H Bomb, a porn magazine published by Harvard students, proudly features “nude co-eds and critical theory”. In addition to racy photos of students sans clothing, H Bomb features student-submitted poetry and essays about politics.
Brothels posing as massage parlors may have a little more trouble doing business in San Francisco after the Board of Supervisors passed legislation Tuesday aimed at cracking down on the suspected 50 or so establishments citywide.
Russian soprano Anna Netrebko lights up opera stage in ‘La Traviata’
By: Mike Silverman The Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO – From the moment she rolls on stage in a 1929 Buick for the opening party scene of Verdi’s “La Traviata,” Anna Netrebko pretty much obliterates everything in her path.
Just try taking your eyes off the Russian soprano as she sings and acts her way through the role of Violetta, a 19th-century Parisian courtesan who falls in love, makes a noble sacrifice and eventually dies of tuberculosis.
Netrebko, at 37, is an opera star at the height of her considerable powers. And her appearance is unquestionably the highlight of the San Francisco Opera’s annual “summer season,” though the other productions – Puccini’s “Tosca” and Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” – have much to recommend them.

Pornographers of all kinds exploit YouTube to drive traffic to their sites and products. Twelve percent of those 101 videos mentioned porn stars by name or were obvious clips from porn movies. In addition, there were thousands of videos and repeated comments that served only as advertisements for hardcore-porn sites, “dating” and escort services, and phone sex lines.
Particularly troubling are animated videos listed under “porn.” Several videos put profanity and sex talk over classic Disney cartoons, like one called “Aladdin Porn.” (Disney ought to be the first powerful player putting a stop to that.) Fans of Japanese anime cartoons can find the animated porn called “hentai,” and skip over the 18-plus barrier or gravitate to hard-core sites the same way they could access live-action sex clips.
CMI also found that gay content, including pornography and ads for gay escort services, are rampant. There are 11,900 gay channels on YouTube, including 459 “gay porn” channels. A search for “gay porn” returns 52,700 individual videos. YouTube even promotes homosexuality on the home page. On the night of June 17, one featured video was a promo for a cheesy new British movie called “Lesbian Vampire Killers.”

He lives at Nevin Plaza, a senior housing complex in downtown Richmond where repair orders sometimes go unfilled for weeks, prostitutes wander the halls, and angry visitors occasionally light fires in doorways. It’s also where most tenant complaints meet with silence, many say.

Repairing a broken toilet (not Wydermyer’s) took 93 days.Tim Jones, the city’s Housing Authority director, acknowledges these are problems and said he is hiring a second maintenance worker to tackle repairs”It’s not unfair for residents to say they want a quick turnaround, whether it’s an emergency or a nonemergency,” Jones said. “We have to do better.”Building safety also could stand improvement, city records show. Complaints — both recorded and anecdotal — show a history of endemic crime in and around the building, from reports of prostitution and drugs to fights and arson. Both tenants and city officials say the vast majority of tenants cause no problems, but the crime affects all.Unauthorized visitors, many of whom sneak in through a back door, frequently occupy the building’s private sec …
Even though nuclear arms control agreements and the waning of the Cold War led to a decline of the antinuclear campaign after 1985, it remained a powerful presence. In Australia, the 1986 Palm Sunday antinuclear rallies drew 250,000 people. Two years later, Australian protest flotillas blockaded the arrival of foreign nuclear warships. In Melbourne, the seamen’s union boycotted the warships and even the prostitutes went on strike, announcing that the nuclear behemoths could “take their money, ships, bombs, and diseases and go home.” In New Zealand, the renamed national movement, Peace Movement Aotearoa, served as the umbrella organization for about 300 peace groups working on projects that ranged from halting French nuclear testing to getting their town or city councils to declare their jurisdictions nuclear-free. The hottest issue, however, remained the Labour government’s ban on nuclear warships. In August 1987, the warship ban provided the central issue in nationwide elections, which Labour won handily—its first re-election victory since 1938. At the same time, antinuclear protest raged in Palau, Fiji, the Marsha …

And in “…Gone, All Gone,” Lawrence writes about a conversation with a friend who confesses his addiction to strip clubs. At the beginning of the book, Lawrence was the brazen one, flouting conventions for her gender and time, but by the end, she’s almost prim: “Often lately I feel I’ve been on earth too long, far past understanding many of the adjustments, the new ways boys and girls, men and women, get to know each other. Blowing, undulating. E-mail. Chat rooms.”
