Photographs of the secret compound appeared in British newspapers over the weekend showing a squalid network of living quarters strewn with junk.
Scores of police, helped by cadaver-sniffing dogs, combed Garrido’s backyard and a neighbour’s property on Sunday.
“I will confirm they are cadaver dogs. We’ll have them go through the backyard,” Jimmy Lee, the Contra Costa sheriff, told reporters.
“Too early to say what we’re looking for,” he said. “Anything that may be linked to some open cases that we have. At this point, we’re going thoroughly through both backyards. It’s just too early to say what we might come up with.”
Police are looking into links between Garrido and a series of prostitute killings in the 1990s, as other bodies had been found close to where he worked, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy Garrido, 55, have been
charged with 29 felonies in connection with the alleged kidnapping, rape and
false imprisonment of Dugard, who was 11 years old when she was snatched from
in front of her South Lake Tahoe home on the morning of June 10, 1991.
Dugard allegedly lived in a complex of hidden sheds and tents in
the backyard of the Garridos’ home at 1554 Walnut Ave. in a semi-rural,
unincorporated neighborhood just outside of Antioch.
While living there, Dugard gave birth to two children allegedly
fathered by Phillip Garrido. The children, both girls, are now 11 and 15
years old.
Phillip and Nancy Garrido pleaded not guilty to the charges during
an arraignment in El Dorado County Superior Court in Placerville on Friday,
according to the district attorney’s office.
Meanwhile, local law enforcement agencies began searching the
Garridos’ property Friday for evidence that could link Phillip Garrido to a
series of unsolved murders of prostitutes in Pittsburg and Bay Point the
1990s, Contra Costa County sheriff’s Capt. Daniel Terry said.

Cadaver dogs search yard of Garrido’s neighbor
Law enforcement from two counties and two city police departments used cadaver dogs to search a yard neighboring the couple charged with kidnapping and raping Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was held captive 18 years in Antioch, Calif., the Associated Press reports. (Here’s raw video of the search.)
Unlike search and rescue dogs used to find living people, cadaver dogs are specially trained to follow the scent of decomposing human remains.
Police in nearby Pittsburg said they’re investigating whether Phillip Garrido may be linked to unsolved murders of prostitutes in the ’90s. Antioch police are also looking into unsolved cases but declined further details.
Some law enforcement agencies have their own cadaver dogs, while others rely on trained volunteer teams. There’s no breed requirement, but search and rescue dogs are typically the larger working and sporting varieties: German Shepherds, Labradors, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers and Giant Schnauzers, according to the National Association for Search and Rescue.

About 20 officers used cadaver dogs, metal detectors and shovels to search the properties in Antioch, northern California.
Neighbours said Garrido lived next door as a caretaker until about 2006. The home also has several sheds and outbuildings.
When current occupant Damon Robinson moved in, he was shocked to find the doors fitted with locks designed to keep people inside rather than out.
“In one of the sheds there was a music player, a couch, a mattress and a VCR. He really wanted the VCR back when I found it,” he said.

Police have been searching Garrido’s home for clues about the murders of nine prostitutes whose bodies were found in an area near Garrido’s workplace between 1998 and 2002.
Mr Rogers says ‘perverts’ in the area were regularly invited over by Garrido for sex, beer and drug parties and that the Garrido home was, in effect, being used as a brothel.
He watched groups of men arriving at the house on hot summer nights. They carried crates of beer. Mainly of Mexican appearance, they lit bonfires, played music and shouted and laughed late into the night.
They also took it in turns to enter a tent erected amid the junk in Garrido’s backyard. ‘I saw them entering the tent one by one,’ he says. ‘I saw them bobbing up and down and I thought, “My God, there is something sexual going on in there”.’

‘They were drinking beer and smashing the bottles on the ground. I thought they had a prostitute or something in there. I thought it might have been some kind of sex party or something. It happened quite often. They were different men each time.’
Ex-wife calls Garrido a ‘monster’
NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) — Philip Garrido’s first wife says the suspect in California’s Jaycee Dugard kidnapping case was a manipulator and monster when she knew him years ago.
Garrido, 58, is accused of kidnapping Dugard when she was 11, keeping her imprisoned for 18 years, raping her and fathering two daughters with her. Police also say they are looking into whether he may be responsible for a series of prostitute slayings in the 1990s, as well.
His wife, Nancy, 55, whom he reportedly married in 1981, was arrested last week along with him.
Dugard and her children have since reunited with her family.
Christine Murphy told TV’s “Inside Edition” she and Garrido were high school sweethearts in northern California.
She said she married him because she thought she was in love but quickly realized there was something wrong with him.

The Sunday search for evidence involved more than 20 law enforcement officers moving in and around the Garridos’ backyard — a collection of worn-out tents, sheds and piles of rubbish where Dugard, 29, and her 15- and 11-year-old daughters are believed to have lived, hidden by tarps and dense brush from neighbors and even a visiting parole agent.
Authorities had intended to complete the search late Sunday, but reported that evidence had emerged that would require further examination of the properties. While officials would not identify the evidence, the

Allen said Garrido was always talking about the church he was
starting and leaving religious pamphlets behind, which Allen said he would
throw out.
Brentwood real estate agent Carla Kirkland did business with
Garrido while working for Delta Bay Mortgage Center in Antioch, and also
mentioned that he would pass out religious literature.
She said one time Garrido brought a girl with him to the office.
“He told us she was his daughter and she was learning the
business,” Kirkland said. The girl shadowed him as he moved around the room,
she said.
Kirkland stopped by Walnut Avenue today, where investigators are
searching the Garridos’ property and a home next door, in part for evidence
that would link Phillip Garrido to a series of unsolved murders of
prostitutes in Pittsburg and Bay Point in the 1990s.
