Over the course of the week leading up to Labor Day, an entire city — complete with departments of public works, planning and “mutant vehicles” — is created and then dismantled on the playa, the ancient lake bed where Burning Man unfolds.
Though popular with tech types from the Bay Area — according to a recent census, nearly one in five burners earns more than $100,000 per year — a fierce anti-commercialism prevails in Black Rock City. Participants are expected to bring everything they need to survive a week in harsh desert conditions — and failing that, to depend on the generosity of others.
As a result, an amazing culture of gifting prevails. Themed camps offer everything from snow cones to coffee, from workshops in erotic massage to healing modalities like reiki and shiatsu. Others set up enormous open-air dance parties that last until daybreak and beyond. And all of it is offered in exchange for little more than a smile.
Herrera said the Pink Diamonds Gentlemen’s Club, located at 220 Jones St., had already agreed to an injunction in March that required the club not to operate after 2 a.m., not to allow excessive noise in the neighborhood, and to cease acts of prostitution, drug and alcohol violations, and violent behavior at the club.
Since then, San Francisco police have been called out to the club more than 200 times, according to the city attorney’s office.
The fatal shooting at 3 a.m. on June 27 of Harris Fulbright, a 30-year-old San Francisco resident, outside the club “represented only the worst episode so far in a pattern of lawlessness,” Herrera said in a statement.

City Attorney Asks Court to Close Down Pink Diamonds Strip Club

City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed a motion in San Francisco Superior Court today asking that Pink Diamonds, a notoriously violent strip club at 220 Jones Street in the Tenderloin, be shut down for repeated violations of the law.
Herrera’s petition, filed with Judge Peter J. Busch, asserts that the club has been the scene of prostitution, drug deals, illegal alcohol consumption, and noise violations since an injunction governing its operations was agreed to by Pink Diamonds operators in March. The city attorney has asked that the judge close the club and impose at least $689,000 in fines on its owners.
“With our motion today, we’re saying enough is enough — Pink Diamonds needs to be shut down before another life is lost,” Herrera said in a statement. “It is obvious that the operators of this nightclub have no interest in running a business within the parameters of the law, and it is equally obvious that this extraordinary step is necessary.”

At first glance, Amsterdam looks much like other canal cities in Europe such as Venice or Bruges but once you get past the cobblestone streets and 17th century architecture, you realize it’s an easy-going city open to anything — really.
Around many corners, you’ll find coffee shops with entire pages of menus dedicated to marijuana or, if you’re in the city’s famous Red Light District, women are selling themselves — legally — in storefront windows.
Of course, in between all the shops that are shocking to North Americans and day-to-day for the Dutch, Amsterdam showcases a wide range of historical sites and museums.
There’s no better way to see the city than the same way as the locals do — by bike!
Amsterdam caters to bikes like most cities cater to cars. Forty per cent of all traffic in the city moves on two wheels, so there are dedicated bike lanes all around and, in addition to traffic lights for cars and pedestrians, cyclists have their own signals, too.
East Bay ACORN chapters have shut down many of their local services as a result of the national scandal surrounding voter registration fraud and videotapes shot by undercover conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp, in which the organization’s workers offer advice about cheating on taxes and operating a brothel with underage immigrant girls.
“We do a lot of good work in the community for low- and moderate-income families and minorities,” said Contra Costa ACORN Director John Adams. “But whatever perception is out there about ACORN nationally hurts us locally.”

In the years since Greenpeace singled out the company, pimping the Cupertino, California-based Mac, iPod and iPhone maker’s high-profile name and products to push its agenda, Apple has moved aggressively to seize the initiative and is now trying to change terms of the debate.
“I thought Greenpeace was being very unfair with us at the beginning, and that they were using us to get visibility,” says Steve Jobs in an interview published by BuinessWeek. “To have people saying we didn’t care and that we were callous in this area was very painful—and untrue.”
Now, with Apple winning high marks from Greenpeace, the company has turned its focus to changing the rules of how a company’s “greenness” is measured by focus sing on the environmental impact of a product’s whole lifecycle. Jobs et al want businesses and environmental groups to measure and emphasize real world impacts, rather than promises and marketing hype.
