San Francisco Massage Parlors: Crowd helps Quan launch Oakland mayoral bid

Quan, 59, a council member since 2003, was a 12-year member of Oakland’s school board who built a strong reputation as a grass-roots organizer and prides herself on regular communication with constituents.
“More than anything, I think people are looking for a hands-on mayor. Someone who’s going to be accessible,” Quan said before the rally, dressed in green to match her campaign posters that read, “Taking Back Oakland, Block by Block.”
Since last fall, Quan has been reaching out to voters, holding conversations in neighborhoods, restaurants and bars.
“We even had one in a massage parlor the other day,” she said. “So far, we’ve had about 110 house parties. We have signed up more than 400 workers. This is the beginning of our walking season. We’ll be continually walking precincts from now on.”

San Francisco Strip Clubs: Turn Off Your Lights, Richmond

U.S. landmarks such as Mount Rushmore, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, the Las Vegas strip and the Empire State Building, and world attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Sydney’s Opera House and Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are just some of the hundreds of sites that will turn off non-essential lighting for the hour.
Here are some lights that Richmond could turn off to participate in this year’s Earth Hour. Thanks to a bunch of Twitter folks for the additional suggestions.
Club Velvet’s completely pointless spotlight. We know where the strippers are.
The new MeadWestvaco building. It doesn’t need to be seen from space.
The spinning marquee outside Movieland with the numerous blinking lights (the one facing Boulevard). People will still know where Movieland is.
The Christmas lights my idiot neighbors still have on their house.
The Sauer’s billboard on Broad St. I think it’s nice too, but I’d be okay with the chef not pouring vanilla extract for an hour.
The lights in Richbrau. They have been on every day. I know for a fact they aren’t open. Or are they reopening…?

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Landlord faces woes elsewhere as he shores up Vallejo building

The north-facing wall facing Virginia Street is visibly sloping inward.
Benefield said Thursday he is doing what the city has asked and will meet today’s deadline, and West agreed that Benefield is complying.
If, however, the requirements aren’t met by late this afternoon, the residential and a number of commercial tenants will be forced to vacate the structure immediately, West said. The property owner also would be required to provide accommodations for them elsewhere.
West also said he’s received reports from building tenants about leaky roofs. He said his department would call for a full investigation of the building soon.
City officials, such as Councilwoman Erin Hannigan, as well as nearby merchants say they have seen what could be illegal activities on the premises, such as possible drug dealing and prostitution.

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: The phrase ’separation of church and state’ appears nowhere in the US Constitution

The issue goes both ways, as some students themselves are misguided on the facts. A public school teacher was scolded by her student for using religious holidays, among other examples, to demonstrate rules on capitalization, being “informed” that she was not allowed to “talk about holy things in public.”
Whether the finger-pointing student holds religious beliefs or not, it’s sad that he believes he cannot express them in public. That this lack of understanding can render a U.S. citizen the target of self-imposed gag orders goes beyond mere rhetoric. Consider the moral vacuum that would be created if everyone were to publically hide personal religious beliefs, and imagine the unsavory forces standing by ready to fill that void. Our country already faces daily assaults on its culture in the form of pornography, prostitution, abortion and beyond. How much farther would these forces go if those who live by the moral tenets on which most religions are based were one day nowhere to be seen or heard?

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: anatomy of a murder verdict

Witnesses on the night of the murder said Lacy and five friends were returning to their car parked on Bryant Street after an evening of drinking at the Blue Chalk Cafe in downtown Palo Alto. Koloto approached the men and robbed Lacy at gunpoint of an expensive gold and diamond-encrusted chain and crucifix. When Lacy lunged to tackle Koloto and retrieve the chain, Koloto shot him in the head, witnesses said. Koloto testified in court the shooting was unintentional.
Moreno served on two juries prior to Koloto’s trial, he said. Twenty years ago, while living in Long Beach, Calif., he was a juror in a solicitation of prostitution trial. He also served in the trial of a man who faced four counts of attempted murder for trying to run people down with his car because someone had danced with his girlfriend.

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Man gives up after dodging SWAT assault

No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred in a rundown, yet historic, building in the heart of downtown. The building has been associated with reports of drug deals and prostitution, but the owner said she’s trying to clean it up.
Residents called 911 at about 10:15 p.m. to reports of shots being fired on the third floor.
When police arrived, some witnesses said the suspect had fled back into his apartment. Police have not verified the landlord’s contention that witnesses on the scene also reported that the suspect had left the building.

The property owner, Daisy Villanueva, who owns several buildings in Vallejo totaling about 90 apartments, responded Tuesday to perceptions of the rundown building being an epicenter for drugs, prostitution and other crimes.

“When I bought the building, the ground floor was leaky and moldy,” Villanueva said, referring to the previously closed storefronts. “We were dealing with prostitutes, druggies, and contrary to public impressions, we have cleaned this building up.”

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Boy witnesses healthcare bill’s signing on behalf of mom

Reporting from Seattle – He has been dismissed by the right as a prostitute for healthcare reform whose mom “would still have died” even with the newly passed healthcare legislation. But 11-year-old Marcelas Owens, who stood quietly next to President Obama on Tuesday as he signed the long-debated legislation, has kept the jitters at bay, friends say, by pretending his mom was sitting in the front row.
She wasn’t. She died three years ago of pulmonary hypertension, largely untreated because she lost her health insurance when she lost her job as an assistant manager at a Jack in the Box restaurant in Seattle.
“It’s tough not having my mom around,” Marcelas, a fifth-grader at Seattle’s Orca elementary school, said at a news conference with Senate Democratic leaders this month. “But she’s been with me in spirit every time I talk.”

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Testimony: Crime Lab Didn’t Investigate How DNA Samples Were Tainted

Yet when asked by defense attorney Erwin Fredrich if he undertook an investigation to determine how Nelson’s DNA got into the sample in the first place, Gabriel replied, “There was no such investigation.”
Fredrich later questioned Gabriel: “If you don’t know the cause, how can you be sure that you will not have further contamination events?” (The prosecutor objected to the question on grounds of speculation, and Gabriel never answered.)
The hearing — which was not conducted before a jury — was part of the trial of Donzell Francis, who was subsequently found guilty of assaulting a transgender prostitute. The crime lab had its own Francis snafu, earning media scrutiny by sitting on evidence for years. Yet the contamination discussed in the hearing occurred while analysts tested evidence in other, unrelated cases. Francis’ counsel had hoped to bring up the incidents in trial to cast doubts upon the crime lab’s work; the judge ruled they could not.
