San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Hand-Drawn Maps of London: Grosvenor and Berkeley Squares

A double dose of hand-drawn mappery this week as we head over to the squares of Mayfair.
The first image comes from Robin Vermeire from the Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square. It’s a bit of a cheat, as Robin didn’t draw this himself – it’s taken from one of the hotel’s ‘really old brochures’. We love the way it distorts reality, showing Mayfair as a green, leafy place devoid of all buildings save the hotel and the American Embassy. And look, Regent’s Park is but a short stroll away behind Selfridges.
The second map comes from Nicholas Hudgell and gives a not-too-inaccurate account of neighbouring Berkeley Square. Among the Rich People’s houses and Rich People’s cars he’s missed the Rich People’s brothel and Rich People’s ghost. But, otherwise, this is more precise than the A-Z.

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Marina housing irks community

The project was chosen out of six ideas to receive funding for homeless prevention, as it provides teens leaving the foster care system a roof and other services, said Douglas Shoemaker, director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing.
Residents and merchants in the neighborhood have expressed outrage at the location chosen for the housing project. Some say the new residents could bring more crime and that including affordable housing into the pricey neighborhood could affect property values.
“We have no problem with the services and what they’re doing for these young people,” said Lori Brooke, president of the Cow Hollow Association. “It’s really the place they chose that’s the problem.”
The project would cram too many people into an undersized building that offers no parking or outdoor space for smokers, she said.
Opponents also say locating the housing on Lombard Street, which they say is known for problem hotels with rampant drug use and prostitution, is not sending a good message to young people.

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Obama criticizes Arizona immigration law

… We want to drive day labor away,” says Republican Rep. John Kavanagh, one of the law’s sponsors.
An estimated 100,000 illegal immigrants have left Arizona in the past two years as it cracked down on illegal immigration and its economy was especially hard hit by the Great Recession. A Department of Homeland Security report on illegal immigrants estimates Arizona’s illegal immigrant population peaked in 2008 at 560,000, and a year later dipped to 460,000.
The law’s supporters hope the departure of illegal immigrants will help dismantle part of the underground economy here and create jobs for thousands of legal residents in a state with a 9.6 percent unemployment rate.
Kavanagh says day labor is generally off the books, and that deprives the state of much-needed tax dollars. “We’ll never eliminate it, just like laws against street prostitution,” he says. “But we can greatly reduce the prevalence.”

Dolphins: Owner Stephen Ross will “take appropriate actions if necessary” against general manager Jeff Ireland for asking former Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant whether his mother was ever a prostitute. Ross said he’ll look into the matter personally. Ireland posed the question during a predraft interview with Bryant. “My job is to find out as much information as possible about a player I’m considering drafting,” Ireland said. “I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poor judgment in one of the questions I asked him. I meant no disrespect and apologized to him. I appreciate his acceptance of that apology.” Bryant’s background received scrutiny from teams before the draft. He was taken by Dallas with the 24th pick.
“My mom is not a prostitute,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. “I got mad — really mad — but I didn’t show it.” NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith also lashed out at Ireland’s line of questioning.

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Broncos’ Clady out several months after surgery on torn knee tendon

The Denver Post’s Mike Klis reported Wednesday that the Rialto Eisenhower grad suffered the knee injury while playing basketball.
Team spokesman Patrick Smyth declined to comment on the report when reached by The Associated Press, saying only that veterans were participating this week in the team’s offseason training program. Clady’s agent, Pat Dye Jr., didn’t immediately return a phone call.
Clady was the 12th overall pick out of Boise State in the 2008 draft.
He allowed the fewest sacks among tackles as a rookie and last year became the 11th tackle to earn Pro Bowl honors in his second season.

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: Berkeley Playhouse’s ‘Oliver!’ Compromises Classic Story

However, Fagin is out-vied for the title of ultimate villain in the story by the far more dangerous criminal Bill Sykes. Indeed Gabriel Grilli skillfully portrays a surprisingly likeable Fagin, who in many ways seems just as much a victim of circumstance as Oliver. Aleph Ayin’s portratal of Sykes, though vocally strong and technically good, lacks any real menace, and is not really sinister enough to frighten even the average third-grade audience member.
Kathryn Zdan gives a standout performance as Nancy, a prostitute hopelessly in love with the heartless Sykes. Zdan’s movingly stalwart solo “As Long as He Needs Me” is one of the musical highlights of the show. Her determined love for a man she knows to be beyond redemption lends a much needed emotional depth to the plot.

San Francisco Adult Entertainment: After the fall: Vietnamese remember ‘Black April’ 35 years later

All she knew about the Viet Cong was based on myths the government had spread. “We thought the Communists were just like animals, or vampires with long teeth,” said Thu, now 52. “But when they drove past on their tanks the day the city fell, they just looked so young, like boys.”
When the old currency collapsed, a system of barter sprang up in Saigon at “the biggest flea markets in the world.” To escape on a trawler required payment in the kind of gold bars Pham’s mother had sewed into her clothes. After fleeing to what was now called Ho Chi Minh City, she lived among the prostitutes of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam until she saved enough gold to escape in 1979. She said half the people who tried to escape after the war didn’t survive.
