San Francisco prosecutors filed murder charges Tuesday in a 2007 sexual assault slaying of a transgender prostitute, a case that became notorious when DNA evidence languished untested for two years at the police crime lab.

Is there a First Amendment right to sell violent video games to children and teenagers?
The California legislature said no. They enacted a law imposing a fine of up to $1000 on retailers who sell violent games to anyone under age 18. Games like the best-selling Grand Theft Auto contain explicit brutal violence and sex. The player directs his character to murder other characters with Uzis and have sex with prostitutes. The Parents Television Council reports:
The beatings are intense and the number of weapons available is staggering. One can use a baseball bat, screwdriver, machete, or even a chainsaw to attack pedestrians to get small amounts of cash. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A convict with a record of violent crimes against women has been charged with the 2007 murder of a transgender prostitute in San Francisco.
Donzell Francis already was in prison for sexually assaulting and beating another transgender woman when he was charged Tuesday in the death of 27-year-old Ruby Ordenana. She was raped, strangled to death and left naked near a freeway three years ago.
Assistant District Attorney Brian Bucklew says DNA evidence shows that Ordenana was the first of at least four transgender victims Francis kidnapped and molested during a year after he was paroled from prison for slashing a woman with a razor.
He also was charged Tuesday in a 2008 attack.

SAN FRANCISCO—A convict with a record of violent crimes against women was charged Tuesday with the 2007 slaying of a transgender prostitute, the first in what authorities described as a yearlong series of attacks targeting San Francisco’s transgender sex workers.
Prosecutors said Donzell Francis, 41, of San Francisco, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, forcible oral copulation, sodomy by use of force and other charges in the death of 27-year-old Ruby Ordenana. She was raped, strangled and left naked near a freeway three years ago, police and prosecutors said.

Earlier this month in San Pablo, Calif., a drunken driver struck and killed a man who was on his way home from Bible study. In Fairfax, Va., a man was arrested for soliciting a prostitute. In Starr County, Texas, a man was arrested for assault causing bodily injury. All three of these criminals share something in common — they are not citizens of the United States and are subject to removal.
All three, like thousands of others, were identified by their fingerprints at the time local law enforcement officers booked them and charged them with a crime. The fingerprint technology was provided through a program of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) known as “Secure Communities.”

The man soliciting a prostitute in Virginia had a prior conviction for an aggravated felony and had been arrested or encountered by local law enforcement 13 times under multiple aliases.
Donzell Francis, 41, is scheduled to be arraigned on murder and other charges in San Francisco Superior Court this afternoon.
He was served with an arrest warrant in prison last week, district attorney’s office spokesman Brian Buckelew said.
A jury convicted Francis in December of forcible oral copulation, robbery, assault causing great bodily injury and false imprisonment for a Sept. 10, 2007, attack on a transgender prostitute, identified by prosecutors as Lena, whom he picked up in his truck in the Tenderloin District.
He was sentenced in January to 17 years and eight months in prison in that case.
Prosecutors say Francis’ DNA has been linked to four sexual assaults of transgender women, including the September 2007 attack.
Francis is now accused of assaulting and strangling another of those four women, 27-year-old transgender prostitute Ruby Rodriguez, also known as Ruby Ordenana.
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) – A San Francisco-based online advertising company proves the old adage that sex sells. Craigslist is projected to post huge profits, due in large part to so-called prostitution ads.
It’s estimated that Craigslist will see its revenue soar by 22% this year, with a profit of between $88 million and $99 million.
“That’s just astronomical,” offered Peter Zollman, founding principal at Advanced Interactive Media Group, which tracks Craigslist’s company earnings.
Craigslist, however, will not discuss its earnings.
Zollman recognizes that some people are offended by racier ads. “Not only is it not illegal, it is very specifically protected by the Communications Decency Act,” he explained.
Zollman doesn’t see Craigslist changing its business model away from the sex-related ads, but other online services may try to copycat.
