Oakland man sentenced in massage parlor robberies

OAKLAND, Calif.—Authorities say a 29-year-old Oakland man who took part in a monthlong string of robberies has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison.
U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken issued the sentence against San Kwen Saephan on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty in December to charges of interfering with commerce by robbery and extortion.
Authorities say Saephan was among a group of people who held up massage parlors in San Rafael and El Cerrito and a karaoke bar in Hayward starting in December 2007.
The group also allegedly tried to car jack the vehicle of a retired San Francisco sheriff’s deputy.
Four other people have pleaded guilty in connection with the robberies.
Authorities say a fifth member of the crew, 25-year-old Choung Van Nguyen, was fatally shot by Berkeley police in June following a chase.

Some of these young women have children themselves and need to be in contact with them. Every level of staff in the juvenile justice system needs to be sensitized to these differences.”

• How girls enter the system: Research shows that far more girls (70%) than boys (47%) are referred to courts on prostitution charges. Studies have also shown that the nature of girls’ violence is more often relational and that girls are more likely to fight with a family member than boys.
Members of the national organization Radical Women put out a call on the occasion of Women’s Equality Day this year saying, “It’s time to reclaim and re-energize a fighting, militant feminist movement!” They are calling for a
multiracial grassroots feminism with a radical program. Radical Women’s San Francisco chapter will gather in commemoration of the day this year with the theme “Immigrant Women Battle for a Better World”.
San Francisco peninsula based Congresswomen Jackie Speier and Anna Eshoo have consistently backed women’s rights. Women in San Mateo County and beyond applauded the two US Representatives when they both demanded an investigation in 2007 of the actions of County Sheriff Gregg Munks. The Sheriff and another male Sheriff’s Department employee were detained at a Las Vegas brothel while there for a law enforcement relay race. As much of $10,000 in public funds were used to plan and take that Vegas trip. The two representatives are staunch supporters of women’s rights to reproductive freedom and job equality. In addition, Representative Speier seeks to keep Big Pharma from influencing medical care that negatively impacts women.
The Pirates made nearly $30 million in 2007 and 2008, according to team financial documents. The teamâs ownership also paid its partners $20.4 million in 2008.
That might help to cut into the reported $120-million debt the team carried at the start of last season.
Pittsburgh made its money the past two years through revenue sharing, network TV and merchandise sales.

Richmond Woman Arrested For Pimping Teen Runaway

SAN RAFAEL — An 18-year-old Richmond woman has been arrested on suspicion of pimping a 14-year-old runaway girl, police said.
The two teens are not related, police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.
Tia Trashae Powell was arrested on suspicion of pandering at about 4:30 p.m. on Canal Street after a patrol officer contacted the runaway girl, who was suspected of loitering for prostitution, Rohrbacher said.
The officer saw Powell walking by several times and discovered that Powell and the girl had been exchanging text messages about prostitution on their cell phones, Rohrbacher said.
“It was obvious the 18-year-old was the girl’s pimp,” Rohrbacher said.

Rohrbacher said the case is unusual because of the ages of Powell and the girl and because the alleged pimp is a woman.

The letter continued: “We recognize that Craigslist may lose the considerable revenue generated by the Adult Services ads. No amount of money, however, can justify the scourge of illegal prostitution, and the suffering of the women and children who will continue to be victimized, in the market and trafficking provided by Craigslist.”

The letter also highlighted a report in May by CNN’s Amber Lyon, who posted a fake ad in the adult section. She received 15 calls soliciting sex in three hours.

Newmark has defended his site, saying it is doing more than any other site that hosts adult ads to help filter out underage prostitutes and report them to police. Best, the Craigslist spokeswoman, said that fewer than one ad in 10,000 meets the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s guidelines for anti-trafficking action.

Craigslist, Facebook and troubling uses of technology
Technology, it’s so tricky. Yet it’s only a tool. Or is it?
• Seventeen U.S. states sent a letter to craigslist yesterday, calling on the San Francisco-based company to remove the (profitable) adult-services section from its popular online-classifieds site. Among other things, the letter charges that the site’s “much-touted ‘manual review’ of Adult Services ads has failed to yield any discernable reduction in obvious solicitations” of prostitution. A craigslist representative’s response to the letter: “We hope to work closely with (the states), as we are with experts at nonprofits and in law enforcement, to prevent misuse of our site in facilitation of trafficking.”
