Galette’s confidence is powerful, her personality radiant. Her thick, black hair is styled in a 1950s-era updo, and she adorns her ears and neck with massive, pearly vintage costume jewelry. She says she’s not always so glamorous — she is, after all, sweating in the dance studio for five or six days a week.
She keeps in shape by dancing and by practicing contortion, but she says she isn’t concerned with having an ideal figure, one that would be photographed for Vogue’s fall issue. She loves herself, respects her body and shares this love and respect with her
audience.
“I think it’s a very powerful statement to be present in your body and use the nearly nude body as a vehicle for storytelling and expression,” she says. “For me, it’s so much about life, and so much about life is being able to inhabit our bodies fully.”
Burlesque shows are usually held in nightclubs and bars. Galette agrees that these shows would be considered scandalous strip teases in the 1950s, but they are hardly what you would see in today’s adult topless bar.
Enlarge Associated Press A processional starts mass at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, in San Francisco. Some Catholic believers in the Americas greeted Pope Benedict XVI’s recent comments on condoms as a sign that the church was stepping into the modern debate in the fight against AIDS, though the church was adamant Sunday that nothing has changed in its views banning contraception. There was praise and wariness for the pope’s comments that condoms could be morally justified in some limited situations, such as for male prostitutes wanting to prevent the spread of HIV. He decided on a project centering on the catadores who work at Rio de Janeiro’s Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest landfill. Money from sales of the resulting art would go to the pickers association.
Seventy percent of Rio’s trash winds up in Gramacho, a vast island of garbage from which the pickers extract certain materials to sell to recyclers. Each catadore has a specialty – plastic bottles, for instance, or scrap metal. One woman even takes unspoiled meat and transforms it into on-site meals for the pickers, who live full or part time at the site.
There’s striking footage of the catadores at work while scavenger birds circle overhead. When a truck brings in a load of refuse, they swarm over the new material while it’s still being dumped.
The catadores are proud of their work – they consider themselves recyclers, not trash pickers, which they see as preferable to such alternatives as prostitution and drug dealing.
Elected governor in 2006, Spitzer resigned in 2008 after The New York Times reported that he had used the services of a prostitution ring, an activity he had previously prosecuted.
Visiting upscale-sex and power-politics arenas, Gibney constructs a story of ambition, adrenalin, animosity and colorful characters.
We meet the giggly madam who ran the Emperors Club VIP “escort” service and learn about “Angelina,” Spitzer’s favorite escort. (In an odd but workable move, Gibney has an actress represent the real “Angelina,” who declined to appear on camera.)
…
As a portrait of Spitzer, the film does not go deep. Spitzer offers little self-insight. When Gibney, who is sympathetic but not soft, asks why he used call girls, Spitzer becomes fuzzy. “I did what I did — shame on me,” Spitzer says, sounding properly remorseful (and like a comeback candidate).

O’Malley said her office recently received a $300,000, two-year federal grant to expand HEAT Watch to combat the sex trafficking of minors throughout the nine-county Bay Area.
The new effort is called the Bay Area HEAT Coalition, or BAHC.
O’Malley said the coalition’s goal is to unite local, state and federal agencies, law enforcement, service providers, and communities in a coordinated effort to rescue sexually exploited children and hold their traffickers accountable across city, county, and state borders.
Speier said HEAT Watch “is the gold standard” for fighting the sexual exploitation of minors, and she’s glad it’s being replicated throughout the region.
Speier said she was horrified by what she saw when she recently rode along with police in an area east of Lake Merritt in Oakland that she described as “the infamous track” because it’s well known for child prostitutes.

Vallejo City Council talks about fire station closure impact
Times-Herald staff report
Posted: 11/18/2010 01:02:38 AM PST
Vallejo City Council focused most of its attention Tuesday night on a five-year city budgeting plan to exit bankruptcy, but heard other items as well:
* Interim City Manager Phil Batchelor told the council that the closure of a new fire station will not require the city to withdraw its paramedic services, per initial concerns.
* The Vallejo Police Department may try to hire two officers to backfill vacant positions, Batchelor said.
* More than a dozen St. Vincent’s Hill neighborhood residents stood with enlarged photos of alleged prostitution activity plaguing the area.
* Two city quality of life ordinances in the works may be delayed significantly by this month’s passage of state Proposition 26, expanding the required
two-thirds vote of approval for some fees formally exempt.

Hayward police arrest 15 in sting aimed at rescuing teen prostitutes
…
HAYWARD — As part of a weeklong, nationwide sting operation targeting underage prostitution, officers in Hayward found two teenagers they believe were employed or “being groomed” as sex workers and arrested 15 adults, including three who face pimping charges.
…
Throughout the Bay Area, 72 suspected pimps, prostitutes and their customers were arrested during the nationwide operation. Six underage victims were found: the two in Hayward, three in Oakland and one in San Francisco.

“Craigslist is down, but other websites are filling the gap,” Stiver said. “There are a plethora of sites out there and none of them are immune (from prostitution ads).”
…
Stiver said the next step is getting victimized young females support and information to help them get out of prostitution.
