10 arrested in morning raid in Oakland

OAKLAND — Police arrested 10 people Wednesday morning during a sweep of 50 different locations where parolees and those on probation live or frequent.
Police said the idea behind “Operation Sunrise” was to make a neighborhood that has had a disproportionate amount of shootings, robberies and burglaries safer for children who walk to school.
Many parents have complained to city leaders that their children walk through prostitution and drug dealing hot spots.
“This operation started as a result of parents talking to me about their children and what they had to endure on their way to school,” said Councilmember Desley Brooks (Eastmont-Seminary).
The area known as Beat 26, which is bordered by 54th and 81st avenues and International Boulevard and San Leandro Street, has logged 213 burglaries, 69 robberies and 24 shootings in the past six months, said Capt. Ersie Joyner. He said that crime in the area is far higher than other beats of similar size. Police said 70 arrest warrants and probation/parole searches were carried out Wednesday.

She finds it in the Burlesque Lounge, a Sunset Strip club run by Cher. With a cornball story to showcase their musical numbers, it’s a cheesy entertainment of interest primarily because of the embedded music videos.

IP4Play promised $10,000 and “other assorted prizes” to the winner of an iP4Playmate contest that invites women to compete with scintillating submissions using iPhone’s FaceTime video chat feature.
“Mr. Hugh Hefner’s innovation of a centerfold in 1953 was certainly ahead of its time and we think, given the progress of technology, we can utilize the ingenuity of FaceTime to provide customers with our version,” said iP4Play co-founder Travis Falstad.
He referred to the yet-to-be-crowned Miss Facetime as “a beautiful woman you can not only enjoy visually but one that you can leverage technology to actually meet and speak with.”
IP4Play launched in 2010 with a stated mission to combine “the bleeding edge of technology” with live adult entertainment.

When discussions in the gallery turn from the canvas to the plate, two names often pop up. Kao Sarn Thai Cuisine (130 Washington Ave., 510-233-8585) has an amazing pumpkin curry, but The Baltic (135 Park Pl., 510-237-1000, BalticJoint.com) stands out for its history, feel-good food, beer selection, and live music. Constructed in 1904, the space has housed everything from a brothel and a speakeasy to a funeral parlor and City Hall. Brought over from San Francisco in 1904, the bar and back of the bar escaped the 1906 earthquake and still provide sturdy support for glasses and patrons full of beer. A cold liter of one of the German beers on tap is the perfect accompaniment to a plate of the ultimate comfort food: käsespäetzle — soft, thick egg noodles drenched in melted cheese and onions. Most nights feature live music, though the Thursday night jam sessions are worth a listen if only for their laid-back, coastal coffee-shop feel.
Limon Rotisserie is one of the few sit-down restaurants in SF that will fill you up with a ceviche, main dish, two sides and maybe a glass of sangria for under $30. I wish I could say the ambiance was as good of a deal, but it turned out to be more of a schizophrenic episode. The upstairs dining room is sleek with avocado walls, large colorful paintings and a bar to pony up at while you wait for a table to open. However, the downstairs is a mishmash of neon orange lights, low booths, odd wall murals and exposed ceiling piping that does not exactly spell out romance or even intimacy. Our party agreed that it bordered on a cross between a rundown gentlemans club from the eighties and Chuckee Cheese, a fact that unfortunately distracted us from fully enjoying our meal. The conventional wisdom in the shipping industry had been that Somali pirates are businessmen looking for a ransom payday, not insurgents looking to terrorize people.
Pirates — who currently hold 30 ships and more than 660 hostages — typically win a multimillion ransom for releasing their captives, a huge sum that is shared among investors and pirates. The money is often spent on alcohol, drugs and prostitutes. One ransom paid last year was reported as $9.5 million. Most ransoms are worth several million dollars.
