2. The BART board of directors has tabled plans for late-night train service after a federally required civil rights study determined that the proposal would harm low-income riders. The Chron reports that the BART board postponed discussion of the late-night service proposal until July 14. At issue is whether running trains late on Friday and Saturday nights will force BART to begin train service later on Saturdays and Sundays. The civil rights study concluded that starting trains late on the weekends would unfairly harm low-income commuters who need to get to work early.
3. The Oakland City Attorney’s Office is about to start sending letters that warn about the dangers of prostitution to the homes of people who cruise the city looking to hire sex workers, the Trib reports. Police, public officials, and community groups hope the letters will help stem the growth of prostitution in Oakland.
Two confused beat cops approached, saying they would check with their supervisor. Returning, they insisted our barbecue violated Municipal Police Code Section 720, which actually prohibits news-racks from showing genitalia and breast images.
The sergeant compromised: We could grill between parked cars. Driving away, he cautioned, “Sitting on the sidewalk is a citable offense.”
The Tenderloin, Polk and Sutter, San Francisco, as reported by Rachel West
US PROStitutes Collective and Legal Action for Women held their event in the Tenderloin at Polk and Sutter. Tenderloin sex workers, people of color, immigrants and LGBTQ people face regular police harassment.
Our focus was reclaiming public space for all criminalized people. Key message: Criminalization must end.
Sex workers, many driven into prostitution by homelessness, poverty and destitution, report being repeatedly ticketed and arrested for loitering and nuisance charges under existing Municipal Police Codes. Now they face sit/lie enforcement.
Oakland Neighborhood Fights Prostitution Problem
…
It’s not hard to find prostitutes along the busy thoroughfare at any time of day or night. At about 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, a KTVU photographer shot undercover video of a woman talking with a series of men before disappearing around a corner.
…
Andy Nelsen of the East Bay Asian Youth Center told KTVU that prostitution has been a drag on the neighborhood for too long. He has come up with a novel way to discourage the brisk business the prostitutes are doing in the area.
…
Businesses and neighbors would watch for prostitution, take note of the john’s license plate number. Participants would forward that information to the youth center, which would then pass it on to the police who in turn would send out the letter.
“The letter won’t make any accusations or indicate that there was any criminal activity,” said Nelsen. “[They're] just to say: ‘look this car was seen in an area where there’s a lot of prostitution activity.’”
Buying this forged slip of paper that most drivers barely check to begin with has cost Muni thousands a week for years. Now, thanks to a CBS 5 investigaton, the streets are without two top counterfeiters.
Art Mio and Marcos Aviles were caught counterfeiting transfers in a residence on the 3100 block of 18th St. Police arrested them and confiscated 287 counterfeit tickets. They estimate that the dollar-a-piece transfers netted Mio and Aviles about $500 a day.
Porn heir’s testimony promised in Novato murder trial
James Mitchell, an heir to the Mitchell Brothers adult entertainment empire who is charged with clubbing a Novato woman to death and kidnapping their baby two years ago, will take the stand to explain why he went to her apartment the day of the homicide, his lawyer said.
Knotty Hair Salon rooted itself in Suisun City just two years ago, though owner Emily Giangrasso has operated the salon for almost 10 years now. Originally located in Fairfield, Giangrasso said she wanted a bit of a change for her business. She decided the building at 601 Main St. was just the right spot to relocate, but not before she did a bit of remodeling.
“It was such a cool building I (thought) we could make something of this,” she said.
Since the building had been a bank previously, she liked the idea that a vault was located within the space. The area is now used for her shampoo chairs. The building had also previously been used for just about anything you could think of under the sun: A ballet studio, wedding shop, recording studio, massage parlor, and real estate company.

The Lusty Lady stripper pole will make its way down Market Street per usual during the annual Gay Pride Parade on Sunday, along with the Pink Pistols gun-rights folks, city and state dignitaries, marching bands, Catholics, Jews, atheists and, of course, a little bit of leather.
Despite an organizational meltdown and financial crisis over the past year, the nonprofit that produces the parade came up with enough cash and sponsors to maintain the San Francisco celebration for its 41st running.
A $225,000 debt rung up by the S.F. Pride Celebration Committee has been reduced to $77,000 since December, in part because new leadership has cut administrative expenses.

For a groovy experience, you could go all hippy and take a trip, man, on the Magic Bus, a 90-minute journey through time to the ’60s.
San Francisco was Ground Zero for the Summer of Love in ‘67 with soap and job-dodging teenagers wearing flowers in their hair and espousing peace.
The bus tour (complete with bubbles flying out behind it) will bring you to the heart of music areas like Haight Ashbury (check out the Jefferson Airplane house, where the Grateful Dead hung out) and Fillmore (the epicentre of the African-American jazz and blues scene).
If you want to find out everything you need to know about how nice free love was in the ’60s, and discover how a concert venue manager got crushed to death on top of his stripper girlfriend in more recent times, look no further.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) — Days before a San Francisco man was arrested on a US Airways flight over his saggy pants, the same airline allowed a man showing much more skin to fly.
Jill Tarlow, who was on the June 9th flight from Fort Lauderdale to Phoenix, told CBS 5 the man wore a woman’s bathing suit, thigh high stockings and high heels.
“I just kept thinking to myself. What if I was wearing that outfit?” Tarlow said. “Would US Airways not ask me to cover up? If a woman was in a stripper outfit they’d allow her to just board?”
According to Tarlow, many passengers complained about the man’s attire to the gate staff. She telephoned US Airways after the plane landed in Phoenix.
Tarlow said an airline spokesperson told her “…As long as he’s not harassing anyone or exposing himself, then we’re fine with it.”
The Killing wrapped up season one on Sunday night with “Orpheus Descending”, a surprisingly effective hour of television that despite its well-placed twist still managed to piss me off and leave me feeling used like a cheap Beau Soleil call girl.
Let’s get the spoilers out of the way. When last week’s episode ended all fingers were pointed at Councilman Richmond (Billy Campbell) as Rosie Larsen’s killer. The hooker with the weird name ID’d him and Linden (Mireille Enos) was at ground zero when her little email harassment campaign found its target. This week picked up right where we left off with Richmond acting very creepy and Linden’s head about to explode as she made her escape from his posh apartment. She and Holder (Joel Kinnaman) spent the next 50 minutes gathering evidence against him. Holder really stepped up with some fancy math that led them to a gas station where the attendant remembered the campaign car and the screaming girl. The chief still wanted more t …
Episode Title: “Orpheus Descending”
Writers: Veena Sud & Nic Pizzolatto
Director: Brad Anderson
Previously on “The Killing”:
Linden and Holder investigated a high-end escort service and one of its dangerous clients, a man known as “Orpheus.” Linden contacted the John via email only to discover that Darren Richmond was the man on the other end. Meanwhile, Terry bailed Stan out of jail after Mitch refused. Richmond’s mayoral chances improved greatly when human remains were found at Mayor Adams’ waterfront site. However, his relationship with Gwen took a hit when Adams handed her an envelope full of photos of the councilman and other women.
Story:
Inside Richmond’s apartment, Linden (Mireille Enos) comments on Richmond’s (Billy Campbell) use of the screen name, “Orpheus.” He explains the origin of the name as Linden gets a call from Holder (Joel Kinnaman), who has just confirmed that Richmond is “Orpheus.”
