Baking Bread and Playing Trivia: The Culture Blog Gives Back Tweet Share In the spirit of Thanksgiving, today’s post will be pimping my recent experiences with two wonderful San Francisco non-profits that, unlike my normal posts, deserve your attention: La Cocina and De Marillac Academy. My good friend Christine volunteers her public relations services to clients of La Cocina, which helps low-income food entrepreneurs formalize their business, primarily focusing “on women from communities of color and immigrant communities.” My friend Garvin volunteers teaching finance to junior high students at De Mariallac, a Catholic, 4th thru 8th-grade school providing “students in San Francisco’s impoverished Tenderloin neighborhood with an education to escape the grip of poverty, achieve success, and become service-oriented leaders.” I’m suddenly committed to getting around to volunteering somewhere. Christine invited me to join her for an evening bread-making class at La Cocina, conveniently located mere blocks away from my home in the Mission. In addition to helping low-income food entrepreneurs get their bus …
… This is an eclectic group, one often bound not by mutual interests as much as mutual enmity — toward Brown, his successors, and the corporate interests of ‘downtown.’ As a result, progressive principles are often wildly inconsistent. Progressives favor more government control over people’s lives for their own good, as when they effectively banned McDonald’s Happy Meals. But sometimes progressives say the government needs to let people make their own choices … Progressives believe government should subsidize homeless people who choose to drink themselves to death, while forbidding parents from buying McNuggets because fast food is bad for us. … Without consistent principles, it’s easy to associate progressives with the craziest ideas to come out of City Hall, and the movement’s bad ideas are memorable. … Daly’s pledge to say ‘Fuck’ at every public meeting makes a killer Internet meme. Hey, let’s legalize prostitution and outlaw plastic bags!”
I know many Vallejo police officers as acquaintances and great family friends. The Vallejo Police Department is incredible. It amazes me how these men and women put their lives on the line to protect even the criminals.
I personally don’t understand that. I think criminals who rob banks, deal drugs, etc. not only in Vallejo but even Fairfield are a clear and present danger to citizens’ safety.
I work with people who are highly educated, highly motivated and are people of integrity and great character. The police officers I know exemplify these attributes. They are the best of the best.
To see people complain about Vallejo, I say to them, stop using crack once in a while. When you witness a crime, report it. Prostitutes, stop walking the streets and spreading disease. Vallejoans: Get off of your butt and get involved in your community.

The secret’s probably been built up enough. Baldwin, better known as Brandy in her commercial prime, made herself into a prominent brothel madam in San Francisco during the ’70s.
…
In 1969, her elite new circle helped her purchase a Victorian home on Sacramento Street and gave her specifications on running a brothel, the kind such gallivanting gentry were hungry for.
…
Never forgoing details, she eventually added a boardroom for clients to hold business meetings, which secured the brothel’s popularity.
…
Baldwin left the brothel world behind, though she still has a stack of newspaper clippings about her former notoriety. She also still speaks about the 1983 film she inspired, “Dixie: Changing Habits,” about a brothel owner sentenced to redeem herself in a nunnery.

A literary kiss farewell to the field of prostitution.
In his op-ed piece (”It’s Not the Radium Advisory Board, “Nov. 11) Richard Bangert declares my article about the Radium Advisory Board’s (RAB) cutback an “insult,” that I “ridicule,” “instill fear and distrust,” use “the word radium four times … because [it] sounds more frightening” and that I “irresponsibly state that Alameda ‘will eventually inherit a brownfi eld.’”
I suggest he re-read my piece and attend more carefully to actual meaning. Meanwhile, I agree that the board is not named after radium, or any of the other contaminants at Alameda Point.
These contaminants include arsenic, benzene, caustic cleaners, cadmium, chloroform, chromium, copper, cyanide, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), the organochlorine pesticide DDx, degreasers, diesels, dioxin, fuels, gasoline, industrial solvents, inert and unexploded ordnance.
Also included among the contaminants are lead, machine oils, medical waste, mercury, naphthalene, nickel, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), paints and strippers, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), radionuclides, silver, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), toluene, trichloroethylene (TCE), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), vinyl chloride, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), xylene and zinc.

Gaddafi, Jean-Claude Vannier, Metallica and Lou Reed. Mike Patton will talk about anything. Just don’t ask him to pimp his latest project, says Jeremy Allen

On the line from San Francisco, Mike Patton has a lot to talk about. It’s been a busy year again. In fact it’s been it’s been a frantic few months, what with the release of a new Fantomas DVD: The Director’s Cut: A New Year’s Revolution, his Solitude of Prime Numbers soundtrack just out and a recent appearance at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Beck and Jean Claude Vannier to play Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson and Vannier’s lost-and-found cult classic L’enfant Assassin des Mouches.

This action marks the second time Mayor Jean Quan provoked protesters, and it marks a movement by other city Mayors that appears to be spreading across the country, as officials test the water to see how far they can push Americans of the Occupy Movement before protesters decide to start pushing back.
Two members of Mayor Quan’s staff resigned due to her decision – her friend and legal adviser Dan Siegel, and Deputy Mayor Sharon Cornu also resigned a few hours later.
Both stated that they were resigning due to Quan’s mishandling of the Occupy Movement.
Seigel told his Twitter followers that he had resigned in protest of the police action, and that the Mayor should, “Support Occupy Oakland, not the 1% and its government facilitators.”
That isn’t a drug-dealer or “pimp” talking – which is how many media outlets attempt to portray members the Occupy Movement.

Jim Jones, founder of the 8,000-member People’s Temple in San Francisco, once asked Margo St. James, founder of the prostitutes‘ rights group, COYOTE (Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics), how he could obtain political power.
…
When San Francisco District Attorney Joe Freitas learned of the killings, he was in Washington, D.C., conferring with the State Department about the mass suicide-murder in Jonestown. He immediately assumed that Moscone and Milk had been assassinated by a People’s Temple hit squad. After all, George Moscone was number one on their hit list. Freitas had been a close friend of Jim Jones. After the massacre in Guyana, he released a previously “confidential” report, which stated that his office had uncovered evidence to support charges of homicide, child abduction, extortion, arson, battery, drug use, diversion of welfare funds, kidnapping, and sexual abuse against members of the sect. The purported investigation had not begun until after Jones left San Francisco. No charges were ever filed, and the People’s Temple case was put on “inac …
