Oakland’s shrinking police force will grow by 25 officers, thanks to a federal grant announced Wednesday.
The city won $10.7 million from Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, which is part of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts said he hopes to center the officers around four middle schools in the city’s highest crime neighborhoods. The specific schools have not yet been chosen, Batts said.
Additionally, some of the officers will be used to fight prostitution and human trafficking, especially as it impacts teenage girls, Batts said.
Despite the reduced federal grant money available this year for the COPS program, Oakland fared better than most communities that applied for the two-year grant.
