Life at the top is tough …; not. While the economy is struggling to regain footing, the good times have already returned for America’s CEOs (not known to suffer long or much). Examples: Lawrence J. Ellison, Oracle, $70.1 million; Ray Irani, Occidental Petroleum, $76.1 million; and Philippe P. Dauman, Viacom, $84.5 million (in just nine months). Fourth-quarter profits at American businesses were up an astounding 29.2 percent. (Still not up, obviously, is hiring.)
The Romanian Senate recently killed a bill that would have regulated — and taxed — fortune tellers and witches, even though the government is strapped for revenue. Although dissent came from predictable sources, one of the bill’s sponsors told the AP that defeat came primarily at the hands of lawmakers who feared that spells and curses might be placed on them. (Talk bout leverage.)
