But the better European leagues offer players something the D-League can’t: money. Six-figure contracts are plentiful in Europe, and the D-League pays meal money by comparison. Players earn $13,000, $19,000 or $25,500. That’s it. A single 10-day contract in the NBA at a prorated portion of the rookie minimum of $450,000 eclipses what they make all season in the D-League.
So to play in the D-League, you’ve got to forget the money and believe in the dream. If you weren’t drafted, but you believe you’re as good as those guys in “The League,” this is where you come.
Basketball in Bakersfield
Even in springtime, Bakersfield looks sun-blasted. Concrete and corrugated metal dominate the landscape in Oildale, the rough-and-tumble part of town near the airport. There are strip clubs and biker bars, discount marts and liquor stores. If you’d like to join a white supremacist group, well, you’ve got a handful to choose from. Put your car radio on scan and you’ll hear any number of preachers and kooks, plus plenty of Christian rock.
